Senhora do Monte Viewpoint

Lisbon Seen From Its Highest Point

Hidden within the traditional neighborhood of Graça, the Senhora do Monte Viewpoint (Miradouro da Senhora do Monte) is often described as the most complete panoramic viewpoint in Lisbon. From here, the city unfolds in every direction, offering both historical depth and a powerful sense of place.

A place linked to the conquest of Lisbon

This hilltop area has been strategically important since medieval times. During the Christian conquest of Lisbon in 1147, the surrounding hills played a key role, serving as observation and defensive points over the city below.

Senhora do Monte – Chiado and Bairro Alto

The presence of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte, modest and quiet, reinforces the historical continuity of the site. For centuries, this spot has been associated with reflection, protection, and watchfulness over Lisbon.

The chapel of Senhora do Monte

The small chapel that gives the viewpoint its name is simple in appearance but rich in symbolism. It has long been a place of devotion for locals, contrasting with the vast openness of the view outside.

The Chapel of Senhora do Monte offers an extraordinary collection of 18th-century Baroque tiles depicting scenes from the life of Mary. You can also see the Chair of St. Gens where, for 15 centuries, pregnant women from Lisbon came to sit.

Senhora do Monte – Castle, Baixa and Chiado

This balance between intimacy and scale is part of what makes Senhora do Monte such a special place.

Graça, street art, and local life

The viewpoint is deeply integrated into the Graça neighborhood, one of Lisbon’s most authentic and residential areas. Around it, traditional streets coexist with a strong presence of street art, reflecting the creative energy that has become part of modern Lisbon.

Senhora do Monte – night view

This mix of everyday life, art, and history makes the walk to Senhora do Monte as rewarding as the viewpoint itself.

Lisbon’s widest panoramic view

Situated at the highest point in Lisbon, Senhora do Monte offers an exceptional 360-degree panorama. From here, it is possible to see:

  • Mouraria and Martim Moniz below
  • The Castle Hill and São Jorge Castle
  • Baixa, Chiado, and Bairro Alto
  • The São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint across the valley
  • The Tagus Estuary, 25 de Abril Bridge, and Cristo Rei
  • The Church of Graça and the Estrela Basilica in the distance

Few places in Lisbon allow such a complete understanding of the city’s geography in a single glance.

Senhora do Monte on my tours

The Senhora do Monte Viewpoint is a highlight of my Historical Tuk Tuk Tour and Half-day Tuk Tuk Tour, where its panoramic position helps explain Lisbon’s layered history and urban structure.

It is also included in the Lisbon Street Art Walking Tour, combining viewpoints, neighborhoods, and contemporary artistic expression.
