History, Tiles, and Alfama at Your Feet
The viewpoint sits directly above sections of Lisbon’s medieval walls, a reminder that this area once marked the edge of the city. The presence of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta left its mark in Church of Santa Luzia, adding another historical layer to this quiet corner of Alfama.
The small church of Santa Luzia and the surrounding terrace help preserve the sense of continuity between Lisbon’s defensive past and its everyday life today.
A privileged view over Alfama
From Santa Luzia, the view opens naturally over Alfama’s rooftops, church towers, and the Tagus River beyond. It is a wide yet intimate panorama, allowing visitors to clearly see how the neighborhood unfolds toward the water.

Unlike higher viewpoints, Santa Luzia feels close to the city — ideal for understanding Alfama’s scale, texture, and rhythm.
Azulejo panels that tell stories
One of the viewpoint’s most distinctive features is its azulejo panels, decorating the walls of the terrace. These traditional tiles depict historical scenes and everyday life in old Lisbon, offering visual context to the city spread out below.

The panel on the left gives us an idea of what the Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) was like before the 1755 earthquake. Although it was made in the 20th century, it is a partial replica of a panel in the Tile Museum. The panel on the right represents the conquest of Lisbon from the Moors in 1147.
A relaxed and photogenic atmosphere
With its shaded pergola, flowers, and open terrace, Santa Luzia has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. This calm setting, combined with the iconic view, makes it one of Lisbon’s most popular spots for photography.
Whether you visit early in the morning or later in the day, Santa Luzia offers a moment to slow down and simply enjoy the city.
Santa Luzia on my tours
The Santa Luzia Viewpoint is a natural stop on my Historical Tuk Tuk Tour and Half-day Tuk Tuk Tour, where it helps explain Alfama’s history and layout.
It also fits perfectly into the Historical Lisbon Walking Tour, especially for those who enjoy combining viewpoints, history, and authentic neighborhoods.
