Belem Tower

A Symbol of Lisbon and the Age of Discoveries

Standing on the banks of the Tagus River, the Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) is one of Lisbon’s most iconic monuments and a powerful symbol of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. More than a defensive structure, the tower represents a moment when Lisbon was at the center of a global maritime network that connected Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Historical significance

Built in the early 16th century during the reign of King Manuel I, the Belém Tower originally served as a defensive fortress guarding the entrance to Lisbon’s harbor. It was also a ceremonial gateway to the city, from which ships departed on long and uncertain voyages.

Designed in the Manueline style, the tower combines Gothic elements with maritime symbols such as ropes, armillary spheres, and crosses of the Order of Christ. These decorative details reflect Portugal’s seafaring identity and the optimism of an era shaped by exploration and discovery.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Together with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition highlights its exceptional historical and architectural value, as well as its importance in telling the story of European maritime expansion.

The tower’s preservation allows visitors to understand not only its military function, but also its symbolic role as a monument to ambition, navigation, and global encounter.

The story of Ganda, the rhinoceros

One of the most curious details associated with the Belém Tower is the small stone carving of a rhinoceros, known as Ganda. This refers to the famous Indian rhinoceros that arrived in Lisbon in 1515 as a gift to King Manuel I.

Ganda quickly became a sensation in Europe, inspiring artists and chroniclers — including Albrecht Dürer, whose famous engraving spread the image of the rhinoceros across the continent. The sculpture on the tower is considered one of the earliest artistic representations of a rhinoceros in Western Europe, a quiet reminder of how global Lisbon had already become in the 16th century.

Belém today

Today, Belém is a riverside district where history remains strongly present. The area invites slow exploration, with open views over the Tagus, monumental architecture, and a sense of space that contrasts with Lisbon’s hilltop neighborhoods.
